Bring lifestream back!
bring back the original lifestream, meaning the ability to update your status, like and comment others statuses, and upload photos as your status. they also really need this for mobile aim.
294 votesHey everyone, I wanted to share an update on how we’re offering some of Lifestream’s functionality in the new AIM.
Our goal was to find the parts of Lifestream that fit in best with the new chat experience, and then continue to build out those features based on user feedback.
Already you can check your follower/like/comment activity from Twitter, Instagram and other social networks, and you can share your AIM updates with Twitter or Facebook (and reply to updates from people you follow)
We know this isn’t everything (for example, people still want a public place to like/comment on updates) and we’re curious to hear which specific missing parts you’re most interested in.
Please add your vote to the issues that are already listed or create a new request. Thanks!

Timestamps on IMs
It is useful to know the time at which each message is received from our buddies so that we can tell if the second last IM from our buddy is part of the current conversation or is the end of a previous one. This was a feature I found useful in the old AIM.

You can view timestamps by hovering over the time in the body of the mail. It should give you the exact date and time the response was given. We’ll add a settings for you to view actual time stamps instead of how long ago this quarter.

Buddy Lists | Layout | Spell Check | & A few other things.
*Separate the Buddy List from the Chat List. Or have an option for both. The old one was long and slim "skinnier", always on the side desktop. It was convenient.
*Sending images. Opening it up as a link is a HORRIBLE idea.
The older version of AIM version 7.3 had a feature where it would open a new AIM window with just pictures. So both buddy pictures where located in the same place, and decently sized.
*What happened to the Aim Themes?
*TIMESTAMP
*Fonts. Colors.
*Options for the old "IM Bubbles" that didn't have an actual bubble.
*BUDDYLISTS. Please. It's…188 votes -

Emoticons please!
How am I supposed to soften my sarcastic comments without emoticons? Help me not to upset my friends...
155 votesHi Nichole, if you’re using iOS or the Mac client you can use Emoji. Under the menu bar at the top of your Mac’s screen click ‘Edit > Special Characters …When the window pops up, select ‘Emoji‘ on the left panel.

Bring old sounds back
The old sounds are better than the new sounds. I can barely hear the new sounds. If I'm listening to music, I wouldn't even notice if someone IMed me.

Nicknames or Aliases for Buddies
I would love to be able to rename a buddy. For example, xXxSampleBuddyxXx to "John Doe" or "Jane from work". This is a feature in iChat that I use quite extensively and would love to see in AIM.

Make a global preference to keep all messages "off the record".
Would like to see a global preference to keep all messages "off the record" as my default preference. Still allow to move individual conversations "on record" when wanted.
117 votesHi everyone, wanted to share an update about message storage. We’re no longer storing all messages. Instead, only messages between new AIM users will be stored.
You still have the option to take 1:1 chats off the record – and chat messages sent on legacy versions of AIM won’t be logged.
Thanks for the feedback.

allow AIM to run in the background even though we click the close button.
Right now when you click the red x, it exits out of AIM & signs me out. Would it be possible to click the red x to close the window, but remained signed into AIM?

spell check, spell check, spell check
Quite simply, AIM should have a spell checker that you can to automatically underline words that are misspelled and/or alert you of a misspelling when you try to submit your IM update.

Echoing Gus’s comment here: Spellcheck is turned on in the Mac client thanks to the Mac OS, and we have this on our list of things to add to the Windows client. Thanks for indicating your interest in this.

Offer aim as a XMPP service
Offer aim as a XMPP service! Every user should be able to login to aim via XMPP by using a JID like username@aim.com. AIM should enable s2s and XMPP.
+ Ubuntu and GNU/Linux users as well as users of any other OS) could use aim with a XMPP client of their choice
+ aim users could contact billions of other XMPP users
+ aim users could also interact with their Facebook friends (via transport)88 votes -
Allow drag and drop file transfers
Accept file drops onto the conversation view to transfer them. Also allow pasting of graphics into the message field (ala iChat on OS X).

Hi guys, we’ve definitely talked about adding this feature. Hope to have it available soon.
In the meantime, we just launched an updated AIM last week – we hope you can check it out and see the direction we’re headed. Thanks again!

Allow users to reverse the position of the buddylist and preview panes in the new AIM
I'd like to see a preference option to either reverse the position of the buddy list and the preview pane in the new AIM or completely detach the preview pane from the buddylist pane. That way, if I have multiple monitors, or just want to move the preview pane around on the screen so that I can see another window, I don't have to move the entire application window.

Minimize the app in to system tray in Windows version
If user click close button of AIM, minimize the app in to system tray and run the app background instead of stopping the instance of the app. Until and unless user quit the app from system tray

Be able to edit your buddylist (delete, rename, block, etc)
Would like to be able to organize my buddylist as done in older AIM versions. I am not able to delete, rename or anything at the moment.

Notifications
Bring back the old way of notifying people when they receive IMs by showing a preview of the message in the bottom right corner, make the icon blink, and have a louder sound.

The ability to disable the "speech bubble" look, collapsing chat into a more compact "inline" look similar to Legacy AIM.
The "speech bubble" seems like a superfluous detail for conversation, and can add unnecessary bulk. I personally find that it gets in the way of conversation, I shouldn't have to zig-zag my eyes across a conversation.
Thus, I'd like to suggest that users are given the ability to collapse the chat into a simple inline look, they so desire. All conversation left-aligned, with an icon, username, and a mere line separating messages between users. Basically: a similar look to that of Legacy AIM 7.5.
AIM doesn't need to reinvent the wheel, simply give us something that works.

Add an option to send/receive files when you or your contact is not online
Hi, the new AIM is great and stuff, but here's something I really miss in any chat/social PC program: the ability to send files over to people even when they're not online. You simply store files on a server and send them through along with a message once the contact starts aim. When a contact doesn't start aim for a certain amount of time (like, a month or 3 weeks or so), both the sender and the 'supposed-to'-receiver get a notification that their transfer has been stored for too long and they have to upload again.
Would also be great…29 votes -
Serve the most common user cases
I don't feel like the new AIM really.. serves my use cases at all. I mean sure sometimes someone will share a photo, sometimes someone will do this and that and whatever, and some of these inline options and whatever for that are nice. But the main thing people do, more than ANYTHING else, is just TALK to people. They open a window and type in it. And whatever neat new bells and whistles you've added, you've damaged that core action with your alterations to window management. This huge and monolothic window you've got here, where even when all chats…
